Certificate Level

The Certificate Level of the ACA qualification has six modules with an optional bookkeeping programme.

These modules introduce the fundamentals of accountancy, finance and business. Each of these modules are directly relevant to the work that you do on a day-to-day basis.

Exams overview

The modules can be taken in any order. You must pass every exam (or receive credit for prior learning) – there are no options. This ensures that once qualified, all ICAEW Chartered Accountants have a consistent level of knowledge, skills and experience.

Each Certificate Level module is assessed by a 1.5 hour computer-based exam, and can be sat throughout the year at an ICAEW-approved test centre. The pass mark for each exam is 55%.

You may be eligible to apply for credit for prior learning towards some of the Certificate Level modules if you have studied accounting, finance, law or business at degree level or through another professional qualification.

Permitted texts

There are no permitted texts for the Certificate Level exams; any necessary information will be provided on screen.

Six-monthly reviews

It is a requirement of the ACA training agreement that you and your employer meet at least every six months. These meetings are to discuss and monitor your progress on professional development, ethics and professional scepticism, practical work experience and exams.
